What EHR Software Does
An electronic health record system stores and manages patient health information across encounters, providers, and time. At its core, an EHR captures clinical documentation, diagnoses, medications, lab results, and care plans. Modern EHR systems also manage scheduling, billing, referral coordination, lab and imaging orders, and population health reporting.
The capability breadth of EHR systems means that every healthcare organization needs to think carefully about which functions a new system needs to handle, which functions their existing systems already handle, and where integration between new and existing systems creates the most operational value.
